(More customer reviews)I have many spinal fractures because of osteoporosis caused by years of Prednisone use. Standing or walking for any length of time were keeping me housebound. After checking with my local durable medical equipment store, I determined that buying from Amazon was less expensive than my Medicare co-pay would be.
After a lot of research, I determined that I wanted a folding wheelchair light enough for a friend to easily lift in and out of the car, narrow enough to wheel through the standard doors in my home, flip up arms for restaurant dining, foot rests that would easily flip aside for easy access in and out, and that was already assembled. I chose the 16" width and it is 22-3/4 wide measuring from the outside edges of the wheels you use to self-propel. All we had to do was attach the foot rests, which was a simple job.
Manufacturers' sites will usually give size suggestions which are basically based on the width of your bottom. 18" appears to be the standard width, but I'm small at 5'5" and 106 lbs. Based on suggestions, 18" was my size but the 16" gives me plenty of wiggle room and I'm glad I didn't follow the guidelines. Use your own judgement.
Next, I wanted to know the highest rated brands and models, which wasn't an easy task because sellers are biased toward what they sell. I finally chose 5 models and started shopping. First I went to the manufacturers' web sites for more information since descriptions are not always complete on Amazon. Then came the dealings with the many sellers. Orders would be accepted and then canceled even though a seller had listed and charged shipping costs to Hawaii. If you won't ship here, sellers, don't say you will!
This model is all I wanted and I would highly recommend it. I bypassed the free shipping, paying for 2nd day instead because I have a luau to attend, and still saved money. Using Medicare would have cost me $111 more, so keep that in mind, seniors. Now all I need are some neat accessories to make it my own and then Maui, watch out!
