(More customer reviews)As a licensed social worker, I have recommended this style of rollator (a.k.a. walker) to clients who have had knee surgery or who have chronic medical conditions which limit mobility and/or stability. While Medicare won't typically pay for this as durable medical equipment, the cost is tax deductible with a prescription. This one provides especially good value.
FOR ACUTE such as joint replacement, upgraded models such as this one facilitate an earlier recovery. They encourage resumption of independent functioning in activities of daily living (e.g., meal preparation). A rectangular plastic container such as a tupperwear container (without the lid) placed in the basket provided will allow the patient to transport a cup of coffee without spilling, move food items from the refrigerator to a food prep area, or gather clothing in preparation for a shower. The basket--or a cloth pouch attached to the frame--is also a good place to keep a bottle of water or a cordless telephone conveniently at hand during the day.
Ordinarily, joint replacement is an elective surgery. Family and friends who would might otherwise send flowers may consider joining together to purchase this as a gift (instead of flowers) for use when the patient returns home if the patient's living situation allows its free use.
FOR CHRONIC CONDITIONS such as Parkinson's, degenerative arthritis, or for frail elders, this type of rollator/walker may delay loss of independent functioning in at least some activities of daily living. Those who require oxygen may be able to use the basket provided to carry a small tank.
The seat height for rollators is approximately that of a chair. Getting into and out of a chair at the table may be difficult, so some patients will opt to use it for that purpose early in recovery and for brief periods. (The brakes make such use safe.) For added comfort, a gel pad or folded towel or other padding can be taped to the seat. (Using blue painter's masking tape will avoid a sticky residue even if left in place for as long as a week.)
When used outside the home, this walker provides a welcome place to rest anywhere along the way if the patient tires. Family caregivers will appreciate the lighter weight of this model's tubular aluminum frame. While the frame folds, the rollator does take up room.
BEFORE ORDERING:
1. Carefully read weight and height limits for ANY walker/rollator. Both the stated handle height adjustment range and weight limits are important considerations for safe and effective use.
2. Note that for safe use, ALL walkers require adequate walkways (minimum clearance of 36-40 inches), and the removal of obstructions such as throw rugs and cords.
3. Walkers are, of course, intended for use on a single floor.
4. Especially if your vehicle is a compact car, review the dimensions for the folded unit before buying if you plan/need to transport this in your car.
