This review is mostly for those of you shoping around looking for padding, for your bed...and really don't have a clue what this egg crate 'thingy' is.
I have a bad back. One of the things us 'bad back' suffers learn is...get a stiff mattress. One of the second things we learn is, the mattress industry seems to think for a mattress to be stiff--it HAS to be hard as cement. The third thing we learn is...get some padding.
That's why you are here reading this.
So here it is, my review:
1. The dimensions are correct for length and width.
2. Mine came in at about 2 1/2 inches thick and has expanded out to 3...3 1/2 inches over the past three days and two nights.
3. Egg Crate...What on earth are they talking about? Well, it's a style and shape of the foam padding. It is similar to that of an eggcrate. If you look at a dozen egg (pack) from the store, you'll notice peaks and valleys. That's something similar to what an eggcrate foam padder looks like. If you take a piece of paper, draw a straight line at the bottom, then, go up 2 inches and draw a bunch of ups and downs -- like sawteeth on a sawblade--(yes I know, that's a bad metaphor...but it is accurate in looks) then you have an accurate view of what your's is gonna look like. It should be around four inches thick by the time it has fully expanded.
4. Because they roll this in a vacume, it wants to stay in a roll. Take the shrinkwrap off of it, roll it out, drap it over your closet door, with the two ends trying to roll upwards. In the three days and two nights mine has been there--it has straightened out on both ends and does not try to roll itself back up. (I just tried it).
5. Why use a foam pad shaped like an eggcrate instead of one smooth on both sides? As near as I can figure it, the little valleys between each peak have a little airspace between them, even when you lay on it most of these valleys are not covered. This allows air circulation between your back and the foam pad. This means, you won't sweat nearly as much--I agree. (I just tried mine with my hand, yep, there is still an airspace.
six. It's a low cost item. The next one up I priced, was over sixty dollars, and the one after was ninety dollars. Good--I may get another one.
7. Wait, while I go check this out...I'm back. Your first impression will be to flip it over to the smooth side...don't. Put the 'peaks' pointed up. They are not unconfortable. I recommend putting them under your sheets. This will help with not collapsing the peaks and will help keep you foam pad cleaner for longer.
8. My opinion--ever couple of weeks pull the foam pad off the bed, take it outside and 'whack' it against the side of the house five times--hard! This should remove most of the dust and dead skin cells and skin mites. Leave it off the bed until bed time--fully unrolled. (My opinion is don't set it out in the sun-- Ultra Violet light and foam do NOT get along.)
9. When mine gets dirty enough--I'll use my pressure washer to clean it--carefully.
10. Mine seems to work--tonight will be my first night sleeping on it. Nice and soft (especially compared to that stiff mattress) but not so soft as to be 'not there'.
11. Since, the foam pad is rolled to about a two inch thickness (for a 4 inch pad), my opinion is, over a period of many hours use (while sleeping)the pad will probably compress back to its original 2...2 1/2 inch thickness temporally--but I feel that as soon as you roll over, or move around a little it will re-expand to its full thickness. In other words--after a few hours it should compress some but it won't require four days for it to re-expand. I feel it shouldn't take more than a moment or two.
12. All in all, I recommend this product because of its' price and it's eggcrate design (no sweat).
So there it is people, my review. If I discover anything else of note--tonight--I'll post it here tomorrow.
I'm back, it's five days later. So far, no problem. My back hasn't begun to hurt or anything. I haven't noticed any sweating at all--of course it's still spring and I do use a tower fan next to the bed. Still, it is comfortable. I still recommend it. I'll check back in a week or three.
Five stars.
It's June 16, I still have no problems.
